RAIN WATER HARVESTING CAMPAIGN

(JALPHERBHARAN ABHIYAN)

India is rich country but Indians are poor says one of the Swiss Bank directors, India has ample natural resource available, human power, knowledge power all this thinks make this country a very unique country. Indian economy was leading economy and has ruled this world from 1st century to 17th century, but after 17th century India has gone far behind from many other countries. It has been said that if third world war will happen in this world then its pivot reason will be the water because today only 2 percent of fresh water is available to satisfy the thirst of more than 7,00,00,00,000 people and billions of other living creatures therefore proper utilization of water and its proper management is very important.

Today the situation in many part of the world is becoming very horrific and day by day it is getting worst’s. Global warming has made the things more critical for living being. The situation in rural area of India is getting worst, in rural area females are responsible to collect the water for home use because of this they have to travel almost 3.8 km a day which counts 1400 km in a year. In Maharashtra every year in 20000 villages water is supplied by tankers and the frequently of supply is very less therefore the situation gets worst during the summer season not only for human but also for pet animals. The rural people who fall ill during the year from various diseases 70% percent of the diseases are due to contaminated water. Gram Vikas Sanstha has taken the initiative in villages of Marathwada region by providing watershed facility, rain water harvesting, bunds on rivers, small ponds in farms etc.

Demonstration Activity

The goal and objective of Rain water harvesting campaign

  • Creating awareness in the rural area regarding the natural resource management and importance of water
  • Water harvesting program to overcome from water shortage in draught area.
  • Involvement of college students in the activity for sustainable development of natural resources.
  • Water harvesting resource and technology of low cost, reuse of water, ground water level importance. Water awareness and water management programs.
  • Involvement of NGO’s, Youth group, Women Group and other organizations, senior citizen, farmers has played very vital role in the project and create a mass awareness in the community and stake holders of the society.

Activities under water harvesting campaign
Workshop

All the stakeholders of the society like from schools, college, society, colony, NGO,s , labor, Peoples representatives etc are called in the workshop on the topic of water management.

Awareness through Exhibition

To increase the awareness level of the public GVS make arrangements of posters and CD’s so as to create awareness in the society related to water management, importance of ground water level etc.

Competition Program at ground level

GVS makes arrangement of program like essay competition on topic of water, rangoli and drawing competition and debate on the topic of water management and sustainable development.

Public Awareness

To create awareness of water management GVS organized rallies, posters Exibition, pamphlets distribution, free books on water management, programs on Akashwani radio station, local channels etc are organized so that an atmosphere can be create to preserve water and to do its proper management for future.

Free technical guidence

A free technical guidence if possible then with the help of demo’s is being arranged in the societies, schools, college, public places banks and in villages so as to people can be aware of the technology and can use it for the purpose of water conservation.

New initiative, survey and research.

To overcome from the Scarcity problem, GVS conduct survey in the Scarcity area, water quality test, help in setting the water management plan in different area, technological help and counseling on proper water utilization.

Public Awareness camps related to government program

Maharashtra rural employment guarantee scheme for water scarcity, National rural drinking programme, and other rural schemes of government is informed to the public so that they can take maximum benefit from the scheme.GVS request to the residential of our project area to participate in our program and help us in developing our village our state and our nation.

Roof Top Rainwater Harvesting.
  • Though the rainfall is more, the drinking water scarcity is felt in the summer , due to the adverse, geographical and geological conditions.
  • Modern technique, of Roof top rain water harvesting is implemented to store/ recharge the rainwater and to solve the drinking water problem of such villages/wadies & urban area etc.
  • The channel is provided below the roof at the slopping edge of the roof to collect the water.
  • The channel is gently slopping towards the vertical pipe which is connected to the storage tank kept on the ground. The pipe is made out, from the material such as G.I. sheets.
  • At the bottom of the pipe or tube 20 gauge wire mesh is fitted so as to avoid the entry of unwanted materials such as dried up leaves of the trees etc.
  • The vertical pipe, connected to the tank is temporary removed and kept aside so that the entry of the first rainfall water along with dirt, dust, bird shit etc. into the storage tank is prevented.
  • Storage tank can be constructed on the ground or below the ground. Handpump is provided to lift the water from the underground tank.
  • The water in the storage tank is kept clean and free from the contamination by the frequent application of bleaching powder or the disinfectants.

Rainwater planning in the urban area.
  • The water supplied by Pipe Water Supply Scheme to the cities is very less due to excessive increasing urban population, industrial development and uncontrolled civilization.
  • Large number of borewells are drilled in the cities, to support the water supply and meet the additional requirement on account of drinking, industrial development etc.
  • Large number of buildings and tar roads have restricted the groundwater recharge.
  • Due to the imbalance in the groundwater recharge and the withdrawal, the groundwater levels are going down and down.
  • The quality of groundwater is also affected by the pollution.

SOLUTION
  • The solution on above mentioned conditions is to adopt the method of Roof top rain water harvesting to raise the groundwater levels to the safe level and improve the quality of groundwater too. Therefore it has become quite essential to implement this measure.
  • This technique has been implemented on the large scale in the cities of– Hyderabad and Chennai in India. The methodology is described below.

1. Devas filter :- This filter can be made by PVC pipe of 1 to 1.20 m length; Diameter of pipe depends on the area of roof. Six inches dia. pipe is enough for a 1500 Sq. Ft. roof and 8 inches dia. pipe should be used for roofs more then 1500 Sq. Ft. Pipe is divided into three compartments by wire mesh. Each component should be filled with gravel and sand alternatively as shown in the figure. Both ends of filter should have reduce of required size to connect inlet and outlet & connect to recharging borewell.

2. Recharging of bore wells :- Rainwater collected from rooftop of the building is diverted through drainpipes for filtration . After settlement filtered water is diverted to bore wells to recharge deep aquifers. Abandoned bore wells can also be used for recharge. Optimum capacity of settlement tank/filtration tank can be designed on the basis of area of catchement, intensity of rainfall and recharge rate. While recharging, entry of floating matter and silt should be restricted because it may clog the recharge structure. First one or two shower should be flushed out through rain separator to avoid contamination. A diagram of filtration tank recharging to bore well is indicated in Fig
